Year 7 Hands-On Science: Exploring Temperature and Heat
Our Year 7 students recently stepped into the laboratory for an engaging practical experiment exploring temperature measurement and thermal energy.
Kitted out in their lab coats and protective safety goggles, the young scientists put their practical investigation skills to work. The lesson focused on tracking how heat transfers to water over time, requiring accuracy, careful observation, and team coordination.
Step-by-Step in the Lab
To begin the experiment, students carefully measured 150 cm³ of water using a measuring cylinder before transferring it into a beaker. Positioned over Bunsen burners, the beakers were heated as the Year 7 groups monitored temperature changes starting from room temperature all the way up to 100°C.
Working in collaborative lab groups, students took on active roles to gather precise data:
-
Timekeeping: Students used digital stopwatches to track exact time intervals throughout the heating process.
-
Temperature Monitoring: Group members observed suspended thermometers to record rising temperatures at key intervals.
-
Data Recording: Students systematically logged their findings in lab notebooks under the guidance of their teacher, Ms Ngave.
Learning in Action
The energetic hands-on session brought classroom concepts to life, giving Year 7 students direct experience in empirical data collection and laboratory safety procedures. As one student enthusiastically summarised the practical task: “It was amazing!”
