Into the Wild: Year 4’s Unforgettable Mkuru Eco-Camps Expedition
Our Year 4s recently returned from an unforgettable adventure to Mkuru Eco-Camps. This special trip marked the highly anticipated expedition aspect of their Bronze Junior Dragon Award, challenging them to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new cultures, and test their resilience.
From the moment they set off, our Year 4s proved themselves to be absolute superstars, demonstrating courage, curiosity, and teamwork over their two nights away from home. The biggest challenge of the expedition was undoubtedly the 15km hike to the summit of Oldonyo Lendaree. Tackling a trek of this distance is no small feat, but our Junior Dragons took it in their stride. Supporting one another through the challenging terrain, every single student successfully conquered the climb.
Beyond the physical challenges, the expedition offered a rich, hands-on cultural immersion. Our students spent meaningful time with the local Maasai community, stepping back from modern conveniences to learn traditional survival and artisanal skills.
During their time with the Maasai, the students experienced:
-
Indigenous Plant Foraging: Discovering how local flora is traditionally used for medicine, sustenance, and daily life.
-
Traditional Fire Making: Working together to master the art of starting a fire from scratch using only natural materials and friction.
-
The Tannery: Learning the meticulous, time-honored process of preparing and treating leather.
-
Maasai Beadwork: Trying their hands at crafting the vibrant, intricate beadwork that holds deep cultural significance in the region.
For many of our young explorers, spending two consecutive nights camping away from home is a milestone in itself. Sharing stories around the camp, sleeping out in the wilderness, and waking up to the sounds of nature, Mkuru Eco-Camp provided a beautiful, natural backdrop for the students to bond, reflect on their daily achievements, and build a growing sense of independence.
Earning the expedition aspect of the Bronze Junior Dragon Award requires grit, an open mind, and a positive attitude. Our Year 4 students brought all of this and more to Mkuru. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments on this trip and cannot wait to see how these young adventurers continue to grow!
