A Nairobi Adventure for our English Literature A level students

21st October 2022

Over the half term, the English Literature A level students went on a trip to Nairobi to learn more about how colonisation has affected a range of literature as well as how we think. We visited the Nairobi National Museum and learnt about life before and after colonisation and the sacrifices made during the fight for independence. In the afternoon, we went to watch Ngugi Wa Thiong'o's post-colonial play I Will Marry When I Want. This was the play that led to his arrest and time in jail and the play was subsequently banned. 45 years later, and with a recorded introduction by Ngugi himself, we were excited to watch the play for ourselves. It was deeply moving on so many levels and really helped us all to understand many of the post-colonial theories that we need for our coursework.

Of course on top of all the hard work, we built in some leisure time too: shopping and eating out in Village Market; expending all our energy in the trampoline park and watching ' Woman King' at the movies too.

What better way to spend a half term!
