A Valentine Event for a Noble Cause

22nd February 2024

Why Wini? is an important question. First, who's Wini? She's a lot of things. A teacher, friend, choreographer, DJ and most of all part of our Braeburn Family. As a collective, we know the importance of giving back to the community. However, when we heard about what Ms Wini was going through, we had to find a way to give back to her and to pass on the care we had in our hearts.

Love was truly in the air at our recent Valentine's event, aptly named "Cupid's Roses." But amidst the romantic ambiance and cheerful festivities, there was a deeper purpose driving the occasion – a mission to support one of the school's beloved teachers, Ms. Wini, in her battle against cancer.

The event, organised by the student council and supported by dedicated faculty members, aimed to raise funds for Ms. Wini's chemotherapy treatment. Ms. Wini, a respected English and Drama teacher known for her warmth and dedication to her students, was diagnosed with cancer last year, sending shockwaves through the school community. Determined to stand by her side in this challenging time, the students and staff rallied together to organise an event that would not only raise funds but also lift spirits and spread love.

One of the highlights of the event was where attendees could purchase and send personalised roses to their loved ones, friends, or even teachers. Each rose came with a handwritten note, adding a touch of heartfelt sincerity to the gesture. Chocolate and champagne bundles were also bought by the students, a more pricey option, all to raise more funds. The school quickly became a hub of activity, with students lining up to express their affection for their peers and their support for Ms. Wini.

With the continuation of the day, we had the chance to work with the media team to compose a video in tribute to her. Loving comments and the sharing of stories being exchanged, making it one of the best parts of the day! For a moment, we put aside cancer treatments, and donations and gave Ms Wini the spotlight. Who she is, the impact she’s made and #WhyWini?

Throughout the day, the spirit of unity and compassion prevailed, as students and staff came together to show their solidarity with Ms.Wini. Many shared fond memories and words of encouragement, emphasising the profound impact she had made on their lives. It was a poignant reminder of the power of community and the bonds forged within our walls.

As the day drew to a close, the true success of "Cupid's Roses" became apparent. Not only had the event raised a significant amount of money to support Ms. Wini's medical expenses, but it had also brought the school community closer together, reinforcing the values of empathy, resilience, and compassion.

With the collaboration of the whole prefect team, we raised over 1 million Tanzania shillings where 100% of the profits go towards her chemotherapy. A small way for us to help her from so far away.

In the face of adversity, BISA has proven that love conquers all, and that even the smallest gestures of kindness can make a world of difference. As Ms. Wini continues her fight against cancer, she can take solace in knowing that she is not alone – she has an entire school behind her, ready to offer unwavering support every step of the way.
