What does an average week look like for our Key Stage 1 students? Let's take a sneak peek into the world of Year 1/2M!
Year 1/2M have been on an exciting underwater adventure this week, exploring the depths of "Commotion in the Ocean." Through the creative approach of Talk 4 Writing, these young learners have been immersed in the world of marine life.
The week began with an imitation stage, where the children used whole-body actions to mimic the text and understand its rhythm and structure. This kinesthetic approach helped them internalise new vocabulary and sentence patterns. To solidify their understanding, they then drew pictures to represent the sentences, creating a visual representation of the text.
The children transitioned to the innovation stage, where they used their newfound knowledge to create their own poems. By "reading" the combination of pictures and words, they were preparing themselves for writing full sentences. It was a remarkable sight to see their creativity and enthusiasm as they explored the ocean's depths and crafted their own literary masterpieces.
Beyond their literary pursuits, Year 1/2M have also been delving into the fascinating world of science. This week, they went on a journey through the ocean's layers. Our young scientists learned about the sunlight zone, the twilight zone, the midnight zone, the abyss, and the trench. Through a hands-on experiment, they gained a deeper understanding of these different environments and the creatures that inhabit them.
Nature School is a highlight of the week for Year 1/2M. Every week, they explore their wonderful outdoor classroom, engaging in a variety of sensory activities. This week, they enjoyed creating "pet rocks" and leaf rubbings. Nature School fosters a sense of wonder, curiosity, and connection with the natural world. It's a place where they can be excited, calm, adventurers, communicators, risk-takers, confidence builders, and observers.
In mathematics, Year 1 has been exploring different ways to make 7, 8, 9, and 10. They've been practicing their number facts and developing a strong foundation in basic arithmetic. Meanwhile, Year 2 has been learning how to represent numbers on a number line, enhancing their understanding of number relationships and order.
As Year 1/2M continue their learning journey, they are growing in confidence, creativity, and knowledge. Their week is always filled with exciting adventures, both in the classroom and beyond. From exploring the ocean's depths to mastering mathematical concepts, these young learners are well on their way to becoming lifelong learners.
