39 students and 4 teachers set off to Athi River on Tuesday 10th October 2023 to The Lukenya Getaway for a week of team building activities. The Lukenya Getaway offered more than just team building; it was a treasure of fun opportunities. The students spent their time swimming, lounging by the pool, biking around the area and playing pool. Moreover, the natural surroundings were an added bonus, with sightings of antelope and ostriches providing an authentic touch of the wild.

Wednesday was the day we started settling into the hotel and its environment. So, after an early breakfast, the Lukenya team organised some activities for us to loosen up, gain energy, and feel more comfortable. This included things like zumba workouts and team games (go team Chicken Munchers!). We were then given a tour of the compound, familiarising ourselves with the area while being greeted by Ostriches, Ducks, and Antelopes! After a nice lunch break, we went on a short hike up the Lukenya Hills - which allowed us to further bond as a class. The view was breathtaking. Finally, after a long day, we were served snacks and tea to wind down. From then onwards, we were free to do anything… until prep time of course!

Thursday morning excited us, as we learned we were going on the high ropes course! After a relaxed breakfast we headed over to the field for a brief team building activity, splitting into two groups and talking about what makes a good and structured team. Our leader, Sandy, led us to a small hanging rope to introduce us to the plan for the day. Together we had to work to get the rope and swing everyone across it without touching the ground… and we did it successfully! We then moved over to the high ropes, split into twos, and picked an order. Once this was finished, we sent up our first group. People belayed while our peers climbed. I was in group two, and I have to say, the experience was exciting! Let me run you through it:
You start by scaling a thick pole with small handholds and a little platform at the top. Once both partners are up, you shimmy across the thin wire over to the first pole. Most students agreed that bending and wobbling around the two poles were the hardest parts of the whole thing. Once you reach the end, you slap the pole in victory and are told to turn around. You lean back and are lowered by your team of belayers to the ground where you are congratulated with a cheer.
After everyone went through the course we headed back to the main part of Lukenya until dinner.
Friday - by Joshua
On a Friday we did team building activities that included competing against each other and working together to ensure the success of our team. This helped us realise how teamwork can be important especially when you are in a business, it helped see how everyone plays a part. This lesson came from trying to balance a plate of cups with strings and failing a lot! We later had a Bonfire night where we had karaoke and time to get to know each other better. Overall it was a nice experience and it was nice to learn the importance of teamwork in a business, and also how to become a good leader and member of a team in a business and in life in general.
