Adventures in Nature at our Welcome Picnic

6th September 2022

The skies were blue and the sun was shining for our Welcome Picnic and Nature School Launch.

We were excited to see our plans come to life on Saturday! We strived to keep the day as exciting as possible and provide enough activities to keep everyone busy and engaged. From giant den building to yarn bombing to rock balancing to forest scrambles, our students and families had an amazing time exploring all our Kisongo environment has to offer!

Take a peek at the exciting activities set out on the day.

We all had a great time connecting with Mother Nature!

Why is outdoor learning so important?

Braeburn International School Arusha has always placed a high priority upon getting our children outdoors, to appreciate nature and engage with the real world. To these ends, our Nature School is an extension of our regular Nature Walks and annual Expeditions.

Our goal is to share with the children a delight and enjoyment of nature, together with a new set of skills and a growing sense of responsibility for the great outdoors.

Why Nature School?

The evidence is clear: outdoor learning is one of the tools we need to use to raise attainment in our schools and nurseries.

Nature School provides students an opportunity to direct their learning through an emergent and inquiry-based approach to education. This child-centered approach is central to our teaching philosophy and takes place in a natural outdoor setting.

“If we want children to flourish, to become truly empowered, then let us allow them to love the earth before we ask them to save it. Perhaps this is what Thoreau had in mind when he said, “the more slowly trees grow at first, the sounder they are at the core, and I think the same is true of human beings.” - David Sobel, Beyond Ecophobia
