An Ethiopian Experience for Year 9

9th June 2022

Experiential Learning is a huge part of what we do here at BISA. Experiential Learning is the process of learning by doing. By engaging students in hands-on experiences and reflection, they are better able to connect theories and knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world situations.

A great example of this comes from our Year 9s who have been reading an interesting novel called ‘Refugee Boy’ by Benjamin Zephaniah as part of our English classes.

'Refugee Boy' is a story about a boy called Alem who comes from Ethiopia. To learn more about Ethiopia they enjoyed an outing to Herbs and Spices to find more out about Ethiopian food and culture. The chef there showed them how to make Injera. They saw the special tef flour – which is imported from Ethiopia, and learned how it is mixed with water and left to ferment for three days. They then watched the chef make the injera before they had a go themselves!

Afterward, they enjoyed an incredibly delicious Ethiopian meal with lots of colourful different dishes. At the end of the meal they used their experience to have a go at some descriptive writing whilst enjoying the traditional coffee ceremony.
