This week, Years 7 ,8 and 9 got the opportunity to visit the Mahaba Centre near Sable square and work with the Mukuru Art collective; a group of artists from Kenya who are focusing on climate change and recycling. Using materials that may have been thrown away as rubbish these artists are showing how we can use the things around us to turn into works of art.
Artist Stephen Ndavi uses old cutting boards as his canvases and uses the power of art to transform them into masterpieces. He normally works with figures of children playing board and card games, sports, people going about their business and so on. He worked with our students who used boards to paint amazing pictures.
Isaiah Malunga has this unique style whereby he collects children's workbooks around the slum in which he lives and turns them into the background for his art. Some of our year 7s used this technique using an old exercise book, and magazines creating eye-catching pieces.
Artist Kelvin Nzioka paints beautiful abstracts by using blown ink, stencils and perspective. Some of our students got the chance to experiment with this technique and all produced unique pieces as the blown ink was different every time!
Our students had an excellent chance to be challenged in their artistic skills but also think about the materials that we use and throw away and how they can be recycled into art.
Thanks to the Mahaba Centre and the Mukuru Art Collective.
