Bringing the Stone Age to Life: A Creative Journey into Prehistoric Art for Year 3

24th January 2025

This week, our Year 3 class took a fascinating step back in time to the Stone Age! To bring history to life, we set up a hands-on activity where the children learned to create art the way early humans did—using simple tools and natural materials.

The lesson began with a discussion about how people in the Stone Age communicated before written language. The students were captivated by the idea that cave paintings were an essential way to share stories, record events, and express their lives. We examined some examples of real cave art and imagined what the artists might have been thinking as they worked.

Then, it was time to get creative! Using stones, sticks, and charcoal, the children drew pictures that represented their everyday lives, just like Stone Age people might have done. Some drew scenes of hunting, gathering, and cooking, while others captured family groups or animals they imagined roaming around. The classroom buzzed with excitement as they discovered how challenging yet rewarding it was to work with basic tools.

It was incredible to see their imaginations come alive and their appreciation for the resourcefulness of early humans grow. By the end of the session, every child had a unique piece of "cave art" to display proudly.
