Building Better Problem-Solvers: PSHE in Early Years and Primary

29th November 2024

This term, in Personal Social and Health Education in both Early Years and Primary, we've been teaching our youngest learners a valuable life skill: how to resolve conflicts peacefully. This approach, known as the "Choices Wheel," equips children with strategies to handle disagreements and challenges in a positive way.

Understanding the Difference

A key part of this learning is understanding the distinction between small problems and big problems. Small problems, like a toy being taken or a disagreement over a game, can often be resolved independently using the strategies on the Choices Wheel. These strategies include:

  • Ignoring the behaviour
  • Walking away
  • Talking it out
  • Making a deal or compromise

Big problems, however, are those that involve harm, fear, or unsafe situations. In these instances, it's crucial to seek help from a trusted adult immediately.

Empowering Our Children

To help our children remember these strategies, we’ve provided them with a "Choices Wheel" to keep in their planners. This visual tool serves as a reminder of the different options available to them when facing a conflict.

By teaching our children these skills, we aim to equip them with the tools they need to resolve conflicts peacefully, reduce stress, and build positive relationships with their peers. We encourage you to discuss these strategies with your child and reinforce them at home. Together, we can help our children develop the social and emotional skills they need to thrive.
