Challenging Gender Roles in Sociology

19th January 2022

This year we kicked off our IGCSE sociology lessons looking at the family as a crucial institution in any society. As part of our interactive learning the students played a sociology board game focusing on conjugal roles (roles of spouses in a family) and how men and women play different roles in the household. Players were divided into teams and males played against females. It didn’t take long for the students to realise that the game was rigged; males and females had extremely different roles and they quickly noticed that these were in favour of the males. An interesting and fun way to learn about the inequalities that exist in our societies and how we can challenge and change these. This term we have more interactive learning and exciting activities in store- including a visit to the local prison and courthouses for our crime and deviance unit.
