English Outside of the Classroom

24th March 2022

Just because we are preparing for an exam, doesn’t mean that we have to limit ourselves to classwork.

This week the A level Literature Class ordered pizza and watched ‘Taming of the Shrew’ together one evening. This gave us the director’s interpretation of the text. To get a top grade in the A level, we need to be able to explore a couple of different interpretations and what better way to do this than to watch a couple of performances.

The IGCSE students have been working on developing their descriptive writing. To do this, we went to the Tembo Club to describe the beautiful surroundings whilst enjoying the delicious food. We tried to find new and interesting ways to write about the food as if we were travel writers. Look at part of Debra’s description below:

If you are looking for an amazing restaurant where you can experience local cuisine in Arusha, then you are in luck because Tembo Club is the place to go. Located about 12km out of Arusha on the Serengeti Road, it is easily recognisable by a huge elephant head statue. Surrounded by large gardens with a wide variety of indigenous trees, it is hard not to relax. Butterflies and birds dance to the soothing traditional African music.

The food is rightly renowned for its barbequed meat. The kuku is tender and delicious and the lamb, locally known as nyama choma is well seasoned and falls off the bone. The meat is accompanied with crispy brown Mzuzu and chunky chips which are soft and fluffy inside.
