Enrichment at BISA

6th June 2017

The students who remained here in BISA during Enrichment week also enjoyed many fun activities around the theme of animal welfare. The visited the horses at TGT where they learned how to lead and groom them. They visited a local farm to learn about how the animals and land are cared for. Additionally, they took a trip to Mbwa Africa in Usa River and to Arusha Snake Park.

We asked a couple of our students to update us on all their adventures!

Grooming and Taking Care of Horses - Naomi Malecela

"On Monday, we went to visit horses around the TGT area, where we learned how to groom and take care of the horses with their tools. We used different types of combs to help loosen their dirt, hair, and other detritus and to stimulate the skin to produce natural oils, and we used a variety of brushes to remove the dirt, hair and other material that is stirred up by the comb as well as adding shine to the coat and mane. We learned that long show-quality manes and tails are often picked out by hand to avoid breaking the hairs. We even used a hoof pick to clean the hooves of a horse. After taking care of the horses we went to Mrs Stubbs' house to have tea and cake and play some cards and board games before coming back to school for lunch. In the afternoon we got to visit Miss Travis’s farm to see how they maintain and grow their crops as well as to take care of their animals that they keep like cows, pigs, sheep and goat. What a lovely and interesting day! "

Mbwa Wa Afrika - Lukundo Sikombe
"On Tuesday afternoon we went to the dog care centre located in Usa river,  Mbwa Wa Afrika , where they rescued dogs from the streets who have been through a horrifying accident and they need to be cared for till they get better. We learned how to approach animals who are vulnerable and earn their trust.
Every dog that goes to that center has been damaged by an unpleasant human and if they could speak I’m sure they’d never stop telling their story of how they were chased and abused and forced to leave where they are staying. When we were there we met different dogs such as Tamu,  a female who was hacked with a knife twelve times and she had to lose one leg for it. Now she is in very loving arms and she’s moving to Germany next month.  It has taken time to regain her trust but once you do, you’ll see that she’s sweet, great company and all she’s asking for is a little loving and care, which Mbwa afrika was able to give her. Right now the dog centre is looking for homes for these beautiful creatures, giving the animals a chance to trust us again and letting them see that not all humans are cruel. If you want to help, you can go direct to their website for more information: http://mbwa-wa-africa.org/ ."
