Heart and Circulation Investigations for Science Week in Year 6

16th May 2025

This week, our Year 6 pupils immersed themselves in an exciting and enriching Science Week centred around the circulatory system and the human heart. With a blend of classroom learning, practical investigation, and real-world exploration, the week provided students with a deeper understanding of how the heart functions and why it is so vital to our health.

As part of their scientific inquiry, the class paid a visit to the town’s newly opened sports venue, Bounce. The aim of the visit was to explore how different physical activities affect heart rate. Pupils enthusiastically participated in a range of sports, including pickleball and padel. However, to the surprise of many, it was badminton that caused the most significant increase in heart rate. The pupils enjoyed discussing their findings and making connections to their classroom studies, using their data to consider factors such as intensity, duration, and the type of movement involved in each sport.

Later in the week, the class had the opportunity to visit NSK Hospital, where they explored how modern medical equipment supports the monitoring and treatment of heart-related conditions. Students were fascinated by the variety of machines they encountered, from ECG monitors to ultrasound scanners. With guidance from hospital staff, they learned how these technologies work and how they help doctors understand what is happening inside the body.

Science Week was not only informative but also hugely enjoyable. Through active experimentation and engaging experiences, our Year 6 students have gained a greater appreciation for the heart, the importance of staying active, and the role of science in healthcare. It was a week full of learning, discovery, and enthusiasm - a memorable celebration of science in action.
