How Vocational Skills Lay the Foundation for Creativity

25th September 2025

This term, BISA students are enthusiastically diving into Bricklaying extended learning classes, truly getting their hands dirty. More than simply stacking bricks, these classes offer a hands-on opportunity for students to connect with practical construction skills while broadening their creative horizons.

The Power of the Practical

In an increasingly digital world, BISA recognises the profound value of physical and practical classes. The goal this term is simple yet powerful: to create an immersive, hands-on learning environment. Forget passive listening! Students are actively engaged in the process of building.

Why the focus on vocational skills like bricklaying? Because they offer a unique kind of education that academic subjects often can't:

  • Tangible Results: There's an immense satisfaction in seeing your hard work translate into a solid, finished structure. This immediate, visible reward boosts self-efficacy and a sense of accomplishment.
  • Problem-Solving in 3D: Construction inherently involves spatial reasoning, geometry, and on-the-spot troubleshooting. Students aren't just memorising formulas; they're applying them to make sure a wall is straight, plumb, and stable. This directly enhances critical thinking.
  • Unleashing Creativity: Many people view construction as purely functional, but it's a highly creative process. Designing a structure, choosing materials, and using tools to bring an idea from a blueprint (or just a mental image) into reality is an act of creation. It's creativity expressed through mortar and brick rather than paint or prose.

Meet the Bricklaying Team

The core of this practical movement is the four-person Bricklaying team: Tobiko, Ethan, Damien, and Miles.

These students are learning a trade that is thousands of years old, gaining valuable, life-long skills that open up diverse career pathways. But more than that, they are learning about precision, patience, and teamwork—skills that are essential in any future endeavour, whether they become architects, engineers, or entrepreneurs.

By investing in vocational skills now, BISA is doing more than just teaching students how to lay bricks; it's laying the foundation for their future. It's proving that for a truly well-rounded education, sometimes the most engaging lessons are those learned with a trowel in hand.
