Between the 25th and the 29th of May, 17 eager Y7s visited Savage Wilderness Camp in Sagana, Kenya. Anticipation was at its highest during the final weeks leading up to the trip as they heard stories shared by previous classes who visited. Coming off a great Cinderella performance, the students arrived on departure day fully equipped and ready for a well deserved adventure.
We had three days of exhilarating challenges to complete. Day 1 we started with kayaking on a lake close to the camp. Everybody was incharge of their own and they looked like naturals out there. Of Course one or two kayaks’ capsized but we won't be naming names! We came back to the lake that afternoon for some paddle boarding, which most of the group hadn’t done before. What started as an unfamiliar water sport quickly became a favorite above all others. Some students said it was like surfing on a mattress!
White Water Rafting, Archery and Low Ropes were on the itinerary for day two. Safe to say every student was excited to get suited up and conquer the river rapids. The students learned the value of teamwork as they operated a six person raft and had to depend on communication and trust. Everybody was all smiles even as we swallowed gallons of water splashing our faces. After some rapid fun in the sun, the kids went into survival mode as they took on the archery and low rope circuits. Their accuracy was on point, with one of the students hitting a bulls-eye! Their agility was also on display, giving each other great competition and having fun while doing it.
Duckies, Zip-lining and Wall Climbing were the icing on the cake at Savage Camp. Duckies was another first for many but the kids embraced it just as well. These two person rafts created some epic dynamic duos, who took the lake by storm. The morning was filled with racing, skill tests and learning how to recover from a capsize, a useful thing to know. We returned to camp to what became the highlight of the trip so far. The kids wasted no time getting into their harnesses so they could scale up the rocky wall and glide across the river on the zip-line! The afternoon made for some amazing feats of strength and picture perfect moments.
Evening activities are how we ended most of the days, ranging from talent shows, to song battles and finally a campfire with marshmallows and great laughs but the people at Savage Wilderness had one more trick up their sleeve. We came face to face with the dark, wet and treacherous ‘Night Walk’. This was a challenge to face your fears, use your senses, trust your instincts and show leadership. The trail was full of twists and turns, dips and climbs and mysterious sounds of the forest. Proud to say everyone completed the challenge and came out on the other side a stronger version of themselves.
It's an understatement to say that this was a one of a kind experience. From the adrenaline packed activities, to the delicious menu that never disappointed, the supportive Savage staff and not to forget the friendliest dog, ‘Wambui’. Incoming Y7s, you're so lucky!
