The Jungle Book

18th September 2020

This term, Year 5 have been studying the classic story of 'The Jungle Book' in their Literacy lessons.

They have focussed more closely on one of the opening scenes, where Shere Khan, the fearsome Bengal tiger, finds out that the pack of wolves are hiding Mowgli, the man-cub.

They examined the scene very carefully and collected a range of key vocabulary to help them with their creative writing.

Before the students committed to paper, they began with some shared writing with Mr Brown.  This really helped, as they felt a little more comfortable to borrow some of the ideas that was created together.

Also in Art, Year 5 had a go at using the 'slow reveal' technique to create some fabulous pencil sketches of Shere Khan.

Nerry

The vultures flew above me in the warm sunlit sky as I strolled down the dry rocks. The unusually bright sun, stung the scar on my face. As I looked down, I could see the refreshing waterhole. My shadow emerged across the rocks. I glared down at all of the animals that stood below me. A strange feeling hit me as all of these herbivores, my usual meal, stood without running away. How weird. As I finally got down to the cool water I drank eagerly. My thirst disappeared in no time at all. Without warning, I caught a scent that didn't belong here.

Nidhi

Vultures screamed as they circled above me in the sky. They made my ears bleed. I leapt down the awesome peace rock and as my paws hit the dusty ground, all of the jungle’s animals stepped back. As I reached the shimmering water, I took my drink. Suddenly, a strange scent came up to me. I walked towards the pack of wolves ahead and the scent grew stronger. I finally knew what it was. It was the man cub I had been looking for.

Muhammad

Vultures cried out loudly, as they flew above me. I was running eagerly towards the waterhole. As I arrived, I noticed at least all of the jungle’s animals were there. This should be a feast, but I know I can’t attack because of that truce. This drought has meant that no predators are allowed to attack other animals at this ‘peace rock’. I climbed down the rocky steps and approached the waters edge. As I drank the cool water, I caught the smell of something strange behind the large pack of wolves. I realised what it was…it was the one I had been looking for.

Nuola

Vultures cried as they flew wildly above me in the hot, sunny sky. The sun’s rays scorched the dirty earth underneath my tired paws. I strolled slowly up to the cliff’s edge and glanced down at the fresh pool below. Almost every animal found in the jungle surrounded it. They stood there and, almost in unison, lifted their heads to gaze right at me. I jumped down to the ground and landed on dusty floor. I started to drink the cool water. Suddenly, I smelled something strange in the air. It was the man cub.

Maisa

Four black vultures cried as they circled above me in the burning sky. I strolled slowly to the cliff edge and stumbled down the rocks. I had almost reached the refreshing waterhole as the jungle’s animals stepped back.

Ndaya

Vultures screamed as they circled above me in the bright sunlit sky. The sun’s hot rays scorched the dry earth below. I was now so close to the refreshing waterhole. I needed to quench my thirst.

Haadi

Four vultures circled above me as they screeched wildly in the bright blue sky. The burning hot sun scorched the barren surface below. I winced at the glare of the sun before I caught a glimpse of the refreshing water below. I leaped down on to the dusty ground from the top of the rocky cliff. My dry tongue lapped up the refreshing water and my thirst was quenched.

Suddenly the strange aroma of a human hit me. I took more deep breaths and it was true! My good nose led the way and then I spotted the intruder…the man cub.

Adelaide

Vultures squawked as they flew around up in the bright blue sky. The sun’s hot rays scorched the dusty earth below. I was almost there, at the shimmering, fresh waterhole. I slowly strolled over to the edge of the cliff and looked down to the cold water. Almost every animal in the jungle stood there surrounding it. Almost perfectly together, the animals looked up and stared at me. I leapt masterfully down the hot burning rocks.

Rishawn

Four vultures squawked as they soared above me. The sunlit sky scorched the dusty surface below as I leapt down the burning Cliffside. As I got closer, I could imagine the shimmering, cool water in my mouth. As soon as I took my first sip, it immediately quenched my thirst.
