Passion and Knowledge Collide at the Primary Power House Challenge

25th April 2024

Our first ever Primary Power House Challenge roared to life this week, and it did not disappoint! This year's theme, conservation, ignited a fire in our students, and the energy was palpable throughout the two-day event.

The creative spark ignited on Tuesday 23rd April with a thought-provoking creative writing competition. Students were challenged to express their understanding of conservation through their writing. The prompts encouraged them to think creatively, and the results were truly impressive.

Wednesday 24th April saw the culmination of weeks of preparation and research. The morning belonged to our phenomenal Debate Teams who battled it out on various conservation topics. The passion they displayed for their arguments was inspiring, and it wasn't just the debaters who were engaged!

"These children are going to change the world," remarked one parent after witnessing the debate. Their fervour sparked lively discussions in the audience, with students actively contributing their own thoughts and ideas.

The afternoon shifted gears to an exciting House Challenge Conservation Quiz. It was an exciting, sometimes raucous, competition showcasing the depth of knowledge our students possess when it comes to protecting our planet.

To further celebrate the students' efforts, their creative projects from the holiday challenge were displayed around the amphitheatre on Day 2. It was a fantastic way to showcase the thoughtful and insightful work they produced over the break. The Power House Challenge wouldn't be complete without recognising their exceptional achievement. Our award winners received locally sourced prizes, a reflection of our commitment to supporting local creatives and fostering a sustainable community.

A Voice for the Voiceless: The Winning Poem

Jaden Ngwira, from Year 5, captured the essence of the competition with his winning poem, "The Last One Standing." Written from the perspective of a lonely tree, the poem delivers a powerful message about the importance of conservation.

Jaden Ngwira (Y5) - The Last One Standing

Tree is my name

Hurt by your actions I am

Everywhere I look

Loneliness is what I feel

All my friends are gone

Sad that you destroyed them all

Today I cannot give you rains

Oxygen will not be enough for you all

No shade of mine will be able to cover you all

Earth is no longer the same

Soil Erosion is what my friends and I prevented

Temperatures were never this high

Animals and birds used to find a home in us

Not only was the air clean but

Droughts and floods were never an issue

I hope you find a way to bring my friends back

Not cut me but save me for

Gosh, I am the LAST ONE STANDING.

The Power House Challenge wasn't just a competition; it was a platform for our students to find their voices, champion important causes, and demonstrate a deep understanding of the environmental challenges we face. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of them, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for these passionate young changemakers!
