Pedal Power!

26th January 2024

Today the BISA campus vibrated with the buzz of bicycle tires and excited chatter as we proudly launched our first-ever Bike Day! From Years 3 to 6, student cyclists, decked out in helmets and smiles, pumped their way into a day of adventure on two wheels.

Mr. Wallace's pit crew of keen eyes ensured every bike was road-ready before the pre-event workshop, where budding mechanics learned vital skills like fixing a flat or tightening a chain. Then, "Helmets on!" as the peloton of young riders set off, guided by our vigilant security team.

The 5km path led our most confident adventurers on a picturesque (and occasionally very muddy!) tour of our local area. Those less sure of themselves still had the opportunity to explore shorter routes nearby, which gave them a great sense of achievement. For those without their own bikes, there was no need to worry! We had extra bicycles to share, and thanks to the support of Arusha Bike Centre (ABC) and their generous rental of additional helmets, no student was left without. As the last riders crossed the finish line with triumphant smiles, the air filled with high-fives and a resounding "We did it!"

While some students zoomed around the course, the spirit of Bike Day extended far beyond the wheels. Those who didn't cycle joined in the fun at the bike maintenance workshop, learning valuable skills to keep their own bikes rolling. Throughout the day, other fitness activities kept everyone entertained, from lively games on the field to a fun scavenger hunt.

But the love for two wheels wasn't limited to the older students! Our EYFS and KS1 youngsters had their own mini-bike course during our pool party last week, weaving through cones and mastering balance with enthusiasm. Their shrieks of delight and wobbly handlebars were a heartwarming reminder that the joy of cycling starts early.

From conquering a 5km route to navigating a mini-course, our students proved that two wheels can bring immense joy, a sense of accomplishment, and a healthy dose of teamwork. BISA's inaugural Bike Day was a resounding success!

So, watch out world, there's a generation of young BISA cyclists zooming past, ready to explore every path with their trusty bikes and boundless enthusiasm! We hope this first Bike Day is just the beginning of a rolling tradition, perhaps even a termly event, where we can continue to celebrate the joy of cycling and its many benefits for our students.

A special thank you to Mr Robert Wallace for his expertise and support, and to the Arusha Bike Centre (ABC) for their vital contribution to keeping our young riders safe with their helmet rentals. We couldn't have done it without your support!

See you all on the next pedal-powered adventure!
