13th March 2025

This week, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) staff participated in vital paediatric first aid training, reinforcing our commitment to the safety and well-being of every child in our care. Organised by our school nurse, Phelisters Wegesa, and delivered expertly by Dr Nazeemabbas Suleman, the session provided our team with essential skills and knowledge to respond effectively to emergencies.

The importance of up-to-date paediatric first aid training cannot be overstated. In the bustling environment of our EYFS classrooms, accidents can happen. From minor bumps and scrapes to more serious incidents, being prepared is paramount. This training ensures that our staff are equipped to handle a range of situations calmly and efficiently, providing immediate and appropriate care when needed.

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR): Mastering the techniques for infant and child CPR.
  • Managing choking: Understanding how to dislodge obstructions in airways.
  • Treating burns and scalds: Knowing how to cool and dress burns effectively.
  • Dealing with seizures and allergic reactions: Recognising symptoms and providing appropriate first aid.
  • Managing common childhood injuries: Addressing bumps, bruises, and fractures.

Nurse Phelisters highlighted the necessity of regular training refreshers, emphasising that these skills are not only crucial for our school environment but also invaluable in everyday life. "Ensuring our staff are confident and competent in paediatric first aid gives us peace of mind," she explained. "We want parents to know that their children are in the safest possible hands."

The enthusiastic participation of our EYFS team demonstrated their dedication to providing a secure and nurturing environment for our youngest learners. Their willingness to learn and refresh these critical skills reinforces their commitment to the children's welfare.
