12th January 2023
The election process began with prefect training sessions which all Year 12 students attend where we learned the key aspects of being a good leader and what being a positive and effective role model/leader means in this day and in this environment.
After multiple weeks of these sessions, students who wanted to be considered for a position sent in an application to the Deputy Headteacher stating the position they would like to be considered for and why they should be considered. From here, positions were appointed to all except for those applying for executive roles (Deputy and Head Boy and Girl and Student Council President). The executive role applicants now moved into an interview process. From here, those that moved forward proceeded into 2 weeks of campaigning where they convinced students and teachers alike why they were best fit for the role. Following this, on the last day of school all executive position candidates made a 2-and-a-half minute long speech in front of the Year 6-13 student and teacher bodies and answered 2 quick fire questions varying on how they plan to use their role effectively if they were to be appointed. Next came the voting and the waiting, and by the end of the day, the new Executive prefect committee for the 2023-2024 academic year had been decided.
“You miss a hundred percent of the shots you don’t take.” - Wayne Gretzky, Canadian ice hockey player. A quote that encouraged me to reach out for the chance to become head boy. A chance to lead my fellow students to greater heights. A chance to listen to my peers and be the voice that they longed for. As a prefect, I will work hand in hand with the other prefects and strive to assist the students, teachers and members of staff in any way we can. We will be the students' voice in all aspects of their school life, whether it be in Sports, Academics, Performing arts or even Emotional Support, we will be there. And I myself will strive to ensure that our students are motivated in all that they do and strive to be the best of the best as the current Head-Boy. My name is Clinton Muli Mutuku and I want us not to be better, but be greater."
"My name is Naledi Muraguri and I am the 2023-24 BISA Headgirl. As a new student in BISA, aiming for the role of headgirl was quite daunting one but with the constant welcoming and support the current students and teachers gave me day by day and the knowledge that ‘you miss 100% of the shots you don't take’, I was reminded of my passion and love for taking on responsibility, specifically that which comes along with being a leader, and became confident throughout the election process. Going into these elections I was motivated by the phrase ‘mbele pamoja’ (forward together) which became not only a reminder of my goal but a mantra to bring my peers and I together. I truly believe we as students work better as a collective rather than individuals and in that way, we should strive to move forward together always. I am extremely grateful for the chance I have been given and I am looking forward to collaborating with the prefect team to ensure a bright future for BISA."
The role of Headgirl and Headboy is one that requires someone who is prepared to be a role model and work for the teachers and the students alike to enforce the rules and be available for any problems on either side, as well as help lead the prefect body. We as the prefect body strive to listen to the students and make positive changes. The prefect body includes a huge range of positions to appeal to any and all aspects of student life at Braeburn to name a few there is; Transitional and Emotional prefects - whose jobs revolve around the welcoming and support of new students as well as being emotionally available for any students in need of support; Academic and Sports prefects, Media prefects - who help manage the social media accounts and advertising of the school; Boarding prefects - who take care of the day to day lives of boarders to ensure comfortability, extending from the menus in boarding to the activities the boarders partake in, to the new additions that could be added to enhance life as a BISA boarding student. We will endeavour to come together and work firmly hand in hand this year to ensure the best possible outcome for all students here at Braeburn.
