Take A Glance at our Spanish Curriculum

15th March 2024

Spanish is the second mother tongue in the world in numbers of speakers and the third most widely used language online. It is also one of the official languages at the United Nations and a language of reference in international relations. It is without any surprise, therefore, that there are almost 600 million Spanish speakers in the world, which includes native speakers as well as Spanish learners.

In addition to these impressive facts, there are more and more very attractive post secondary schools developing in Spain, on topics of interest to our students, such as an art school in Barcelona, a hospitality school in Madrid, as well as world renowned and world ranked business schools.

All of the above have led to an increase of interest on campus for the Spanish language. In 2022, we started offering Spanish from Year 9, giving the opportunity to our students to take it as an IGCSE subject.

In Year 8, students get two Spanish taster lessons to decide whether or not they would like to take the class. Then, they have two full years to get themselves to the IGCSE level, which is not easy, but totally feasible. The goal of the syllabus is to develop an ability to use the language effectively for practical communication and it focuses on the skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. The syllabus also encourages students to delve deeper into hispanic culture, which helps with language learning.

In Year 9, the program focuses on the basics of individual presentation – greetings, name, age, nationality, family, pets, etc – school life, house and daily routine, town life and hobbies. The goal with these topics is for students to learn how to talk about themselves, their routine, their family, their house. In Year 10, we go through the same topics but in more detail: learning how to talk about others’ routine, hobbies, asking questions and we work on developing grammar skills with a wide range of tenses. In addition, we add a couple of topics on the world where we live in, the different hispanic cultures as well as the environment and climate change.

These topics provide students with the capability and the knowledge to interact in everyday life situations and a strong foundation to pursue further studies of the Spanish language.
