Tanzanite Senior Dragon Award Expedition

19th October 2021

The Year 8 students made a great start to achieving their Tanzanite Dragon award. The award is based on the International Award and students are required to give their time to learning skills, improving physical fitness, and giving back to the community. A major aspect is also the expedition for the Tanzanite award this involves a 20km hike climbing Ol Doinyo Landaree standing at 2100m.

Let’s hear from the students themselves.

We went to Mkuru Eco Tented Camp, it was an amazing trip in a beautiful landscape. The staff were friendly, and it was a great experience. We loved hearing the stories from the Maasai and how they live, learning how to start a fire and how one killed a lion!
We had to practice our teamwork and problem solving skills; putting up the tents in the strong wind and dealing with each other. The mountain climb was difficult as there were different terrains and a very steep climb. When people were tired, we encouraged each other and supported each other when we felt that we wanted to give up we found the energy to keep going. It was worth the hard work because the views were amazing, and we felt very proud of ourselves.
