Starting in Early Years, children are taught phonics; the journey of learning to read, write and spell. These vital skills are the beginning of a lifelong literacy journey. Phonics, which may also be referred to as ‘Letters and Sounds’, is the process of children learning to read. Here are some of the FS2 children working on some phonics activities.
The process of learning to read and write begins from an early age, where children can learn and practise many skills. This can be done in a range of ways and settings, including at home. Exposing children to conversation and books is essential. Take a look at our Early Years children enjoying some time reading their favourite books in the EYK garden.
Before even beginning to learn letters and sounds, children need to be able to distinguish between the different sounds they can hear. These skills are learned in Creche and FS1 through listening games. Look at our EYFS children using their 'big ears' to listen for sounds around school.
Top tip for supporting early reading and listening skills:
Listening and talking to your child is essential. As part of everyday activities, talk to your child, explaining what you are doing and having conversations. Speaking and listening are the building blocks for reading and writing - if you can't say it or hear it, you won't be able to read or write it! The more language your child is exposed to, the more they will understand and use for themselves.
