27th October 2022
Part of BISA's Global Citizenship and Intercultural Learning Rainbow centres around sustainability. Every day we are feeling the effects of climate change on our planet. Here at school PE lessons are being replaced by swimming sessions due to the extreme heat; our Kisongo campus crunches under our feet as we wait for the rain to finally come; and, in the surrounding area of the school, we are regularly faced with trash and pollution alongside the road.
Teaching our children to be responsible, global citizens has never been more important. This is why we are excited to introduce a new partnership which will lead to 100% of our recyclable waste being recycled!
On Thursday 27th October, Andrew from Chanzi delivered two exciting assemblies for our Primary and Secondary students introducing our partnership. Chanzi use Black Soldier Fly Larvae to convert food waste into nutritious protein for animal feed. Chanzi, and their waste partner Okota, will be partnering with Braeburn to take away all of our organic and non-organic waste and ensuring all is upcycled. Our organic waste will be upcycled by the clever Black Soldier Fly Larvae and our non-organic waste will be sorted and recycled.
So what part do we play in all this?
It's all very simple!
Around the school we have repurposed our bins so we only have blue and green. Blue bins are labelled 'Dry Waste' and Green bins are labelled 'Food Waste'. Our job is to put our waste in the correct bin - that's all!
On average primary schools generate about 45kg of waste per pupil per year, while secondary schools produce 22kg per pupil per year. For BISA, this totals 12,000kg per year of waste.
“There is no such thing as ‘away’. When we throw anything away it must go somewhere.”
– Annie Leonard
We all need to play our part - so 'think before you throw' and help us make BISA a sustainable, environmentally friendly campus.
