Year 4 visited the Twende workshop in Njiro last week. Twende is an organisation that aims to develop the local community through the repurposing of materials and innovation. We had an amazing day developing our knowledge around sound. The students made a flute using a plastic pipe and a wooden dowl.
Hands-on, interactive learning experiences are invaluable in Primary education, especially when it comes to STEAM and using tools. By actively engaging in the learning process and exploring different disciplines, students are able to absorb knowledge and make connections in a way that traditional textbook learning cannot match. STEAM brings together Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, providing students with a well-rounded education and practical skills. Using tools, students can apply theoretical concepts in real-life situations, such as coding a robot or designing a bridge or, in Year 4's case, making musical instruments! Hands-on learning encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, preparing students for success in the future.
A great day, full of learning to measure accurately, use tools and practice shop safety! If only you could hear the students playing the national anthem on their handmade flutes! Many thanks to the staff at Twende!
