What's been happening in Psychology?

25th May 2022

Amongst the broad range of subjects offered at A-Level here at BISA is Psychology! We asked Ms Bradshaw to update us on what our students have been studying in this fascinating subject:

In Psychology this year we have explored everything from mental disorders that many of us might have heard of including depression and anxiety, to looking at those disorders that are not so common within addiction and phobias- did you know that button phobia is a thing? Yes, that’s right- a crippling fear of buttons. We have also looked at core studies in psychology with interesting and rare cases like little Albert and how he was taught to fear white fluffy objects, kleptomania and how this addiction of stealing comes about, animal studies such as that of the famous Alex the parrot…the list goes on. We have played the role of doctor to practice practitioner styles, looked at what we can do to improve doctor- practitioner relationships, and how we can apply everything we learn in real-life situations.

An A-Level in Psychology can lead to many different career paths. According to careers advisors, Psychology students are good all-rounders. They tend to be inquisitive and analytical, and are happy tackling both ‘big picture’ issues and fine detail. They typically have good social skills and are comfortable dealing with others. If our psychology students decide to pursue a career in clinical psychology they can take on further study to qualify in this competitive field. Other popular routes for psychology graduates include teaching and public sector careers such as joining the police force. Psychology graduates excel in jobs that require them to engage with a range of complex issues and develop a strong understanding of areas that may be new to them in a relatively short space of time. These careers include law and management consulting.

A fascinating, exciting subject that can open many doors in the future!
