“World Book Day changes lives through a love of books and shared reading. Our mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own”. (WBD, 2021)
Dear parents,
It’s that time of year again where we are getting ready for World Book Day. The event itself will take place on Thursday 4th March 2021. It will be a bit different to previous years as unfortunately parents are not able to attend the actual day.
However, please do not feel disheartened as you are still able to play a big part in the lead up to World Book Day. This year’s theme is ‘Share A Story’ and in sharing a story we would like you and your family to read a story for your child’s class.
Here is what you need to do: over half term, encourage your child/children to choose their favourite stories and then between you, perform the story. This could be in the form of reading the story whilst each person takes a part by reading their lines or you could even dramatise the story with puppets. How you choose to perform the story is entirely up to you.
Once you have recorded the story, send it to your class teacher who will then share it with the other children. Please remember, it does not need to be perfect and should be a fun and enjoyable process rather than a chore for you and your child.
I am attaching a copy of the story ‘Supertato’ that I recorded with my family last year. You can use this as a form of inspiration. You can decide how much your child takes a lead in the story depending on their age and ability.
In addition to this you can also get involved with other World Book activities. One example on the World Book Day website (https://www.worldbookday.com/reading-stars/) is encouraging your child to become involved in the ‘Sharing a Story Reading Star game’. The instructions are on the website and a certificate can be downloaded as and when they have achieved all the stars. They do not have to complete this by World Book Day and can be completed at their own pace.
We look forward to sharing your stories in class!
Have a lovely half term!
