Globally, an estimated 11 million tonnes of plastic waste leak into aquatic ecosystems each year. At the same time, microplastics accumulate in the soil through sewage and landfills, largely due to the use of plastics in agricultural products. The annual social and environmental cost of plastic pollution is estimated to be between US$300 billion and US$600 billion.
At Braeburn, we do not allow single-use plastics in our school. However, we recognize that plastic waste remains a problem in the surrounding community. Thanks to the efforts of Luciana, our Environmental Prefect, and Mr. Denis, who leads the Roots and Shoots program, students and staff took action on Thursday afternoon by organizing a community clean-up. In a short time, we were able to collect a significant amount of plastic from the roads and fields around our school. While helping the environment, everyone also had a great time.
