Year 4 embarked on their incredible Junior Dragon Award adventure with boundless enthusiasm! They hit the dusty trail and found themselves immersed in the breathtaking beauty of the Maasai Steppe. With their Dragon Award goals in sight, the children tackled every challenge with unwavering determination and grit. For many, it was their first experience of spending nights away from home, sleeping in tents under the open sky.
Our Year 4 class exemplified teamwork and cooperation as they supported each other to overcome obstacles. Curiosity was high as the children peppered our Maasai guides with questions, eager to learn the secrets of fire-making, how to distinguish between medicinal and poisonous plants and how to craft traditional Maasai toothbrushes. They also dived into the process of leather-making and created their beaded keychains, guided by their new Maasai friends.
As they journeyed across the rocky terrain, Year 4 discovered the true meaning of endurance. They encouraged each other every step of the way, culminating in the successful summit of Mount Oldonyo Lendare after 15km hiking. Perhaps the most significant lesson learned was their realisation of being capable of much more than they had imagined. They returned home dusty but brimming with confidence and an abundance of stories about hiking, campfires, and new friendships.
We are deeply grateful to the Mukuru Training Centre for their exceptional hospitality, which transformed our expedition into a resounding success.
