Did you know there are more than 3,000 species of snakes on the planet and they’re found everywhere except in Antarctica, Iceland, Ireland, Greenland, and New Zealand? About 600 species are venomous, and only about 200—seven percent—are able to kill or significantly wound a human. Our Year 1/2 students found out all about this and more as they rounded off their exciting term of learning about amazing animals and their adaptations with a visit to Meserani Snake Park.
Led by a fantastic and knowledgeable guide, Jamal, the children asked question after question about the fascinating creatures. Faced with some of the rarest (and in some cases most venomous) snakes on the continent, the children were curious, shared their own knowledge and built on their understanding.
They saw more than just snakes - crocodiles, eagles, monitor lizards, bats, tortoises and they enjoyed a camel ride! They even had the opportunity to handle two different types of harmless (very placid) snakes. For many of the children, this was a huge step in conquering some of their fears and prejudices about these creatures that are a part of our everyday lives here in East Africa.
We are so proud of our young, budding herpetologists!
