Year 3 Geography - Extreme Earth

28th April 2022

In Geography, Year 3 children have been learning about planet Earth and all it entails!

We kicked the topic off by looking at what’s beneath our feet. Following an instruction sheet: Make a Model Earth, we got messy in the Food Room and kneaded our own playdough in a range of colours before creating a model of the inside of the Earth.

At the very end, we were astonished to discover the beautiful layers which make up our beautiful planet: inner core, outer core, mantle and crust!

As Year 3 children continued their journey through extreme earth in Geography, we thought about how extreme weather may affect travelling around the globe.

We decided to head off to Arusha airport to see the impact of weather on air travel.

Year 3s were astonished to discover that the weather station was actually in an enclosure outdoors! They came across various equipment used to measure the weather, such as a thermo-hygrograph, anemometer and a rain gauge to name a few. The children were full of questions when they met a meteorologist who explained how he collects weather data and produces it as a report to the aviation department who then communicates with pilots! We learned the importance of teamwork and how easy everything becomes when we work together!

We ended our trip on top, literally, by carefully climbing up steep stairs to the Control Tower! There we saw how technology makes the impossible possible! Aircrafts could be seen from miles away and pilots were now able to receive warnings of any sudden extreme weather heading in their direction before it was too late!

It was such a successful trip and we feel privileged to have had the opportunity to learn from such knowledgeable and welcoming professionals we met at Arusha Airport!
