Year 3 students recently enjoyed a captivating field trip to Machame on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, immersing themselves in the heart of their "Beneath our Feet" curriculum. The field trip combined exploration with learning, starting with a scenic hike through the rainforest. Lush greenery and the symphony of birdcalls surrounded the students, introducing them to the diverse ecosystem thriving beneath the mountain's shadow. Some of the students used the opportunity to put their birding knowledge to the test from our 'Birding' Flexible Learning programme.
Emerging from the rainforest, they reached their destination: the awe-inspiring rock formations. Millions of years old, these geological wonders stood as a story of Earth's history. Armed with newfound knowledge from their learning in class, the Year 3 students excitedly examined the diverse shapes, textures, and layers of the rock formations, solidifying their understanding of rock types and formation processes. The rock formations turned into a living classroom!
The journey wasn't just about rock formations. The stunning waterfalls provided another display of nature's power. Our Year 3 students observed how the water flowed from the mountains and how it changed the land. This real-life example of erosion and sedimentation helped them understand and become more interested in the complex interaction between water and rock.
The grand finale awaited at the foot of the waterfall: a refreshing dip in the natural pool. Laughter filled the air as students celebrated their adventure. This "Beneath our Feet" experience was one to remember for our Year 3 students. Science ROCKS!
